  • Using a voltage tester, check to confirm the electric power is off.
  • Connect the wires as shown in the instructions that come with the smoke detector.
  • The new smoke detector will have a third wire that is referred to as “interconnect” and is usually orange or red. Do not connect it if the old alarm only had two connections.
  • Turn the electrical power back on and push the test button on the detector.
